The successful completion of the milestone marks a significant step forward in the industrial-scale production of advanced materials. Four key performance indicators (KPIs) have been achieved, demonstrating the scalability of the innovative GREENCAP materials crucial for supercapacitors, energy storage, and other applications. The KPIs include:
- 10³ kg/year for Single and Few Layer Graphene (SLG/FLG)
- 10⁵ kg/year for Curved Graphene (CG)
- 1 kg/day for MXenes
- 10⁵ kg/year for Ionic Liquid (IL)-based Electrolytes
Key Achievements by Partners
BeDimensional: In July 2024, BeDimensional completed the construction of an industrial plant for the production of SLG/FLG flakes. This facility has a third-party certified capacity of 3.3 tons/year, surpassing the KPI for SLG/FLG production.
Skeleton Materials: Skeleton Materials finalized its HAZOP equipment risk assessment, process and instrumentation diagrams, and mechanical design for its Rolling Kiln Reactor (RKR). By reaching the RKR design freeze in 2024, the company has laid the groundwork for scaling up production.
Carbon Ukraine: Carbon Ukraine developed a molten salt reactor for synthesizing MXenes through MAX-phase etching. Using molten salts (e.g., NaCl, KCl, CuCl₂) as reaction media and etching agents, the company achieved a production rate of 1 kg/day, fulfilling the KPI for MXenes production.
Solvionic: Solvionic has implemented a continuous flow synthesis process for the production of ionic liquids (IL) at large scales and high purity (thanks to complementary funding). The company’s pilot production line currently produces 20 tons/year of pure IL and the process can be easily scaled by increasing production rhythm or duplicating the setup.
Industrial Impact
These advancements underscore the feasibility of scaling up production for critical materials in energy storage and other high-tech applications. From graphene and MXenes to ionic liquids, these breakthroughs pave the way for widespread industrial adoption of cutting-edge materials.
