The GREENCAP project is making significant strides toward the industrial realization of next-generation, sustainable, CRM-free supercapacitors. Two recent results highlight the consortium’s coordinated efforts in scaling up production, standardizing quality, and building a robust European supply chain for key supercapacitor components — from advanced 2D materials to high-performance ionic liquid-based electrolytes.
Industrial Upscaling of Materials and Components
Multiple partners across the GREENCAP consortium have successfully upscaled the production of essential materials, achieving critical project targets:
- BeDimensional (BeD) scaled up the production of few-layer graphene to over 3 t/year, bringing production costs below 1000 €/kg, and initiated the REACH certification process. A quality control protocol was also developed, aligned with the ISO/TS 21356-1 graphene standard.
- University of Cambridge (UCAM) reached a production capacity of over 1 t/year for FLG using high-pressure homogenization.
- Skeleton Materials GmbH (SM) achieved a production rate exceeding 10⁵ kg/year for Curved Graphene, their proprietary electrode material.
- Carbon Ukraine (CU), in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and TU Dresden (TUD), designed and began upscaling a molten salt-based, HF-free etching system for MXene production, now reaching 1 kg/day.
- Solvionic (SOLV) developed and upscaled the production of novel ionic liquid (IL)-based electrolytes, including Pyr13BF4 and Pyr11BF4, with projected costs falling below 100 €/kg, supported by new pilot and industrial production facilities.
🧪 Quality Standardization and Slurry Formulation
The consortium also achieved significant milestones in material formulation and quality assurance:
- A quality control protocol for few-layer graphene was defined in alignment with international ISO standards.
- A robust electrode slurry formulation based on Curved Graphene and Na-CMC was optimized and upscaled by SM, BeD, and TUD.
- Standardization protocols for both electrode materials and electrolytes were introduced to ensure reproducibility and industrial scalability.

🔗 Building a European Supply Chain
In parallel, groundwork was laid by industrial partners — BeDimensional, Solvionic, Skeleton Technologies, Skeleton Materials, and Carbon Ukraine — in establishing a comprehensive manufacturing and supply chain to support GREENCAP’s commercialization roadmap, ensuring materials are produced locally, sustainably, and at scale. This includes:
- The creation of a supply chain ecosystem for 2D materials and ILs tailored for supercapacitor applications.
- Integration of material management practices and standardization protocols to improve efficiency and traceability across the value chain.
- A coordinated effort, led by Skeleton Technologies, to align material development with scalable supercapacitor manufacturing and future market deployment.
